Toorak Road level crossing should be under, not over and Glenferrie Road crossing should go

Thursday, 14 February 2019

The Liberal Nationals and Labor agree on the importance of removing level crossings.

Where we disagree is on the right design to remove them.

Labor’s proposed Toorak Road level crossing removal should be done properly with rail under road, instead of more of their ugly Sky Rail.

Labor should also be removing the notorious Glenferrie Road level crossing - located just 835 metres from the Toorak Road project.

By choosing Sky Rail for Toorak Road and not fixing Glenferrie Road, Labor is giving local residents maximum pain for too little gain.

By contrast, Liberal level crossing removals are done properly.

The last Liberal government removed five level crossings with a rail under road design at Springvale Road, Springvale; Mitcham Road, Mitcham; Anderson Road, Sunshine and Rooks Road, Nunawading.

As Treasurer, in my 2014-15 Budget, I funded another eight rail underpass level crossing removals. These Liberal National level crossings removals are at Main Road, St Albans; Clayton Road, Clayton; North Road, Ormond; Blackburn Road, Blackburn; Centre Road, Clayton; Koornang Road, Carnegie; Burke Road, Glen Iris and Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena.

While Labor took four of the Liberals' fully funded removals and converted them into Sky Rail, commuters can see the difference between level crossing removals done properly and those done by cutting corners.

The community deserves to have these level crossings removed properly.

That’s why the Toorak Road level crossing removal should be rail under road and why the level crossing on Glenferrie Road should be removed as well.
