Daniel Andrews just can’t get bail right

Thursday, 7 June 2018

Now under Daniel Andrews, our police are reportedly being forced to babysit and ferry criminals hundreds of kilometres to court because of his failed changes to the bail system.

The Andrews Labor Government not only weakened Victoria’s bail laws in 2016, it has also alienated bail justices to the point where they are deserting the system which needs them for out-of-hours bail hearings and other important functions.

While the circumstances around the Bourke Street tragedy are still the subject of inquiry, bail justices have historically remanded at far higher rates than magistrates.

I’ve been inundated with complaints from bail justices who, as volunteers, feel betrayed by the Andrews Labor Government. Bail justices have been given an ongoing role under bail changes, but no real support, training or assistance to perform their duties.

We need to get bail right and diverting limited police resources from tackling home invasions or violent crime to playing babysitter for criminals is not sustainable.

Only the Liberal Nationals will have the tough on crime policies to make Victoria safer.
