Danny O’Brien MP and Margaret Fitzherbert MLC

Tuesday, 13 March 2018

Danny O’Brien, Member for Gippsland South, is joining Shadow Cabinet with responsibilities for the portfolios of Sport, Veterans, Gaming and Liquor Regulation.

Born and bred in Gippsland, Danny has spent his entire career focused on regional Victoria, first as a journalist and later as the CEO of the National Irrigators’ Council, as well as a number of positions advising governments on policy.

Danny is also a strong supporter of community sport including his work as Publicity Officer for the then Latrobe Valley Football League and continues his involvement in grassroots sport to this day.

His passion and experience with community sport will be important as we sell our policy to develop suburban and regional sports. Daniel Andrews wants to give $300 million of taxpayers’ money to the AFL to redevelop Etihad Stadium, but we believe all of that money is better spent on community sport including building new change rooms to cater for the boom in female sport.

I am also pleased to announce that in addition to her portfolio responsibilities, Margaret Fitzherbert will take on the critically important role of Chair of the Victorian Population Policy Taskforce.

Margaret will continue to work on developing the ideas needed to decentralise our state’s population.

Victoria is growing at an unprecedented rate of well over 100,000 people a year, but around 90% of those people are settling in Melbourne. The Victorian Population Policy Taskforce is focused on strategies to regionalise our growth and ensure that it is spread throughout the state, in particular ensuring there are jobs and opportunities available for those who live in the country.
