Labor at risk of Hazelwood 2.0

Monday, 15 January 2018

If Daniel Andrews forces another power station to close, we would have lost nearly half our power supply since he was elected.

Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria’s power generation has already been slashed by 22%.

Reports today show Victoria faces losing up to a further 25% of energy supply earlier than expected due to Daniel Andrews’ ideological 40% Victorian Renewable Energy Target.

Providing 25% of energy supply to the grid, Yallourn power station has applied to extend its licence from 2026 until 2050 so that it can operate until 2032 and allow for a safe rehabilitation period. However there is no certainty that Daniel Andrews will approve this extension.

A Liberal National Government will scrap Daniel Andrews 40% State Renewable Energy Target and ease cost of living pressures for all Victorians.

Daniel Andrews is repeating history by threatening to allow Yallourn to close early, just he did with Hazelwood.

The closure of Hazelwood ripped 22% of energy supply from the grid. With the early closure of Yallourn, we risk a total shortfall of up to 47%

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources, David Southwick MP:

We’re looking at Hazelwood 2.0 here. Daniel Andrews needs to learn his lessons from past mistakes and extend the Yallourn license.

With energy prices skyrocketing under Daniel Andrews, Victorians cannot afford another early power station closure, risking further price increases and shortages in supply.

Victorians deserve affordable and reliable energy supply, and the Andrews Labor Government need to start taking responsibility for it.
