Royal Commission needed to protect our protectors

Wednesday, 6 December 2017

Reports on 3AW radio this morning of more bullying and assault in our fire services raises the question of why Daniel Andrews is allowing a human rights report to be blocked.

Daniel Andrews has failed to fix the issues within our fire services and instead just continues to wage war on volunteers.

That is why the Liberal Nationals have announced we would launch a Royal Commission into Victoria’s fire services if elected in 2018.

Daniel Andrews is allowing his United Firefighters Union mate Peter Marshall to block a Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) report in the Supreme Court.

Frances Diver, CEO of the CFA, continues to make clear there is a culture of bullying and harassment particularly against women in the CFA. Ms Diver has also made clear she would welcome the VEOHRC report being made public.

Serious allegations, potentially criminal in nature, of bullying, intimidation, sexual harassment, discrimination and other forms of detrimental action, have been outlined in a series of reports over recent years, but which have not been addressed.

Only a Royal Commission, with the powers it possesses, will be capable of overcoming the obstacles that have thwarted so many earlier efforts at reform.

A Royal Commission is now vital and urgent.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin:

Only a Liberal Nationals Government will protect those who protect us.

A Royal Commission is now vital and urgent as Daniel Andrews continues to allow bullying and harassment in our fire services to go unresolved.

Daniel Andrews needs to answer why he is failing firefighters by allowing the UFU to block a human rights report on bullying and harassment.
