Drug injecting rooms

Tuesday, 31 October 2017

Daniel Andrews’ rushed announcement to set up a drug injecting room in Richmond is a panicked backflip from a desperate Premier who has given up fighting Victoria’s drug problems.

There’s no such thing as a safe injecting room for deadly and dangerous drugs like heroin and Ice. It sends the wrong message to our kids and effectively says we’ve given up on preventing drug use.

The former Liberal Nationals government funded three residential rehabilitation facilities but Daniel Andrews cut funding for this critically important measure.

A better approach is helping addicts, putting more police on the beat and toughening up our laws to punish parasitic drug dealers and traffickers.

Victorians couldn’t believe Daniel Andrews in 2014 when he said he wouldn’t introduce drug injecting rooms. How can Victorians believe him now when he says he won’t introduce them into suburbs like Frankston, Mentone, Mordialloc and Eltham?

He’s lied before on drug injecting rooms and he will lie again.

Last month, the Andrews Labor Government voted against amendments proposed by the Liberal Nationals to reduce trafficable quantities of drugs.

This is a panicked backflip by a Premier more interested in saving votes in the Northcote by-election rather than taking action to fight the scourge of drug addiction.
