Surge in violence towards Victorian health workers

Monday, 23 October 2017

According to the 84 Health Service annual reports released in parliament this week, the rate of occupational violence Victorian health care workers experienced in the last year grew by a startling 33%.

The Andrew’s Government’s health data dump revealed that compared to 8,752 reports of violent incidents in 2015-16 there were 11,636 incidents reported in 2016-17 – a massive increase of 2,884 reports.

In addition, there were 567 occupational violence incidents reported at Ambulance Victoria, recording almost no improvement from the previous year.

The safety of health workers and patients must be Daniel Andrews’ priority.

The seriousness of occupational violence is as clear as ever after an assault at Box Hill Hospital this year saw a respected surgeon and father tragically killed by a violent assailant who was on bail at the time.

The Victorian Auditor-General’s 2015 Report into Occupational Violence against Healthcare Workers clearly identified the need for government to do more to address unnecessary and preventable levels of risk and occupational violence.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge:

“Daniel Andrews is comprehensively failing to deliver his election promise to reduce violence against health care workers.”

“It’s unacceptable that our dedicated health care workers are experiencing a 33% increase in violence incidents at work.”

“Perpetrators of violence are often on ICE, bail or parole and Daniel Andrews has done nothing to fix this.”

“Victorians want leadership and solutions to end violence but under Daniel Andrews we see assaults and violent crime skyrocketing.”
