About Gladys

Member for Chisholm

Proud Melburnian

Gladys has been a Melbourne local since 1985, when she uprooted herself from her birthplace of Hong Kong to study speech pathology at La Trobe University.  She barracks for the Carlton Blues and became an Australian citizen in 1992, one week before the birth of her first child, Derek. Gladys has been passionate about making Australia a better place to live ever since.

Small Business Owner

Gladys has been the co-owner of two restaurants and opened her own private speech pathology practice in 2000, running it full-time before she made the move into politics as an adviser to the then Victorian Leader of the Opposition, Ted Baillieu.  Her experience running her own small businesses have taught her first-hand the importance of strong economic management in improving the lives of everyone in our community.

Gladys is a proud single mother and has raised two high-achieving children on her own. Her son Derek is a management consultant at Bain and Company and has recently completed an MBA at Harvard Business School. Her daughter Sally graduated from Princeton and currently works for a global company as a strategy manager for Australia, New Zealand and Japan.  She is also an Australian U18 Girls Chess Champion and represents Australia in Ultimate Frisbee.  While her childrens’ careers have taken them far from home, she looks forward to spending quality time with them when she can.

Gladys is strongly passionate about being an advocate in Parliament for people with hearing loss, having been deaf in her left ear since childhood.  She believes in the importance of education as a great equaliser, and is committed to being a voice for people from migrant backgrounds. Having come from a background of domestic violence, she is also passionate about being a voice for women and children in difficult situations and helping them to get the help they need.

Federal Member for Chisholm

In 2019, Gladys decided that she wanted to give back to the community that she had called home for over 30 years.  She was elected in May 2019 to the 46th Parliament of Australia for the seat of Chisholm, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.  She is committed to hearing the concerns of everyone living in Chisholm and is working hard to make sure their voices are heard in Parliament.
