Local, interstate and overseas Rugby Union fans have yet another chance to attend a world-class sporting event in Melbourne, with the upcoming Australia versus Wales Rugby Union Test Match at Etihad Stadium.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher today encouraged all Rugby Union fans to throw their support behind Australia’s Wallabies, as tickets for the June 16 international are now on sale.

“Melbourne has a very successful track record in hosting premium international sporting events, and the June 16 match between Australia and Wales is yet another significant event for our great sporting city,” Ms Asher said.

“The match will generate economic benefits for Victoria with rugby fans visiting from interstate, and branding exposure for Melbourne in interstate and international markets.”

This game is the first in a five game package the Coalition Government has secured for Melbourne, with games against France, England and the British and Irish Lions coming up over the next five years.

The Victorian Government’s Rugby Union Events Package with the Australian Rugby Union supports the sport in Victoria and builds on the success of the Melbourne Rebels.

“Melburnians have shown they are strong supporters of the sport and the Victorian Coalition Government will continue working to strengthen our major sporting events calendar,” Ms Asher said.

“Major events are a $1.4 billion industry for Victoria each year.”
